Stockbridge is a charming Hampshire town on the River Test, one of the most famous chalk streams in England. The wide main street runs along a ridge above the river, with a mix of Georgian, Victorian and older buildings housing shops, galleries and pubs. The Test and its carriers flow through the water meadows on either side of the town and all that clear, cold water creates a very specific pest picture. Rats thrive along the riverbanks and in the water meadows, using the dense bankside vegetation as shelter and the rich river environment as a food source. Properties that back onto the river or the water meadows see rat activity more than most and we regularly trace runs from the river corridor into the gardens and outbuildings of homes in the town.

The buildings along the High Street are a mix of ages and styles and many have the gaps and worn features that come with centuries of use. Mice get in through gaps around door frames, spaces in old brickwork and openings where pipes pass through walls. The food shops, restaurants and pubs along the High Street need to stay alert to the risk of mice getting in, especially in the older buildings where the structure has plenty of small openings. The surrounding downland and farmland also contribute to the pest picture, with field mice and rats moving between the agricultural land and the edges of the town as the seasons change. Wasp nests are common in summer, appearing in the old wall cavities, under tile roofs and in outbuildings across the town. The chalk grassland on the downs above Stockbridge supports a rich insect life that keeps the colonies well supplied with food through the warmer months.
