Stafford is the county town of Staffordshire, sitting on the River Sow where it meets the Penk before flowing into the Trent. The town has a mix of medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings in the centre, with residential areas spreading outward through Rowley Park, Castletown, Highfields and beyond. The rivers are at the heart of the rat problem in Stafford. The Sow and its tributary streams provide rats with water, cover and routes through the built-up area and we see activity all along the river corridor from Victoria Park through to the industrial areas east of the town. The flooding that Stafford has experienced in recent years is also linked to rat problems, as rising water drives rats out of their bankside burrows and into nearby gardens and buildings.

The town centre around Greengate Street, Market Square and the Shire Hall area has a good number of pubs, restaurants and food outlets. These older commercial buildings often have cellars, service yards and shared walls that give mice easy access. Food waste from the night-time economy adds to the attraction and keeping mice out of a building with a sixteenth-century cellar is harder than it sounds. The residential streets of Victorian terraces around Rowley Park and Forebridge share the same connected structure that makes terraced housing tricky from a pest perspective. Further out into the newer estates at Weeping Cross, Wildwood and Baswich, the pest pressures shift a bit. These areas sit on what was farmland and properties on the edges of the town often see rats and mice moving in from the surrounding fields. Squirrels are also a problem where mature trees line the streets or where gardens back onto the woodland around Cannock Chase to the east. Wasp nests are a summer constant across the whole town, from the old buildings in the centre to the modern housing on the outskirts.
