Laleham is a riverside village on the northern bank of the Thames between Staines and Shepperton, one of the quieter spots along this stretch of the river. The village has managed to retain a distinct identity despite being surrounded by the suburban growth of the Spelthorne area. The core of the village around All Saints Church has period cottages, Georgian houses and a peaceful green, while beyond this centre there are more modern houses and bungalows. The Thames dominates the southern boundary, with the river meadows and towpath providing a green buffer between the village and the water. Laleham also borders several large reservoirs to the north and these extensive water bodies have a direct influence on the local pest picture.

Brown rats thrive along the Thames corridor and around the margins of the reservoirs, feeding and sheltering in the bankside vegetation. They move into the village along drainage ditches, through the river meadows and along garden boundaries. Properties closest to the Thames or the reservoir edges see the highest levels of rat activity, but rodents can travel further through the underground drainage network. Mice are common in both the older period properties, which have more gaps due to their age and the modern homes where construction joints and utility entries can provide access if not properly sealed.

The mature trees and garden hedges throughout Laleham support grey squirrel activity and these animals can become a real nuisance in roof spaces. Wasp nests are common in summer, with the older buildings and garden structures providing sheltered nesting sites. The riverside environment also brings flea risks from foxes and other wildlife that pass through gardens.
