Bridgnorth is a town of two halves, literally. High Town sits on a sandstone cliff above the River Severn and Low Town spreads along the riverbank below, connected by a cliff railway and a series of steep paths. That split creates two different sets of pest conditions. Down by the river, rats are the main concern. The Severn floods regularly and the damp ground, old cellars and commercial buildings along the waterfront give brown rats everything they need. We carry out rat control in Low Town throughout the year and the work picks up after flooding when rats get displaced from their bankside burrows and push into nearby properties. The pubs, restaurants and shops along the river all need to stay on top of rodent-proofing because the water is never far away.

Up in High Town, the pest picture changes. The older buildings along the High Street and in the streets behind the castle ruins are a mix of Tudor, Georgian and Victorian, many with deep cellars and interconnected roof spaces. Mice do well in these buildings because there are so many hidden routes through shared walls and ceiling voids. A mouse problem in one property can quickly become a problem for the neighbours too. The sandstone that the town is built on is full of old caves and passages, some of which connect to cellars and these underground spaces can shelter all sorts of pests. Wasps nest in the cliff face itself as well as in the eaves of buildings and wasp removal on the cliff-side properties sometimes needs specialist access.

The surrounding Shropshire countryside adds to the mix. Farmland presses close to the edges of town and squirrels from the woods along the Severn Valley move into roof spaces whenever they get the chance. Bridgnorth's position on the river and the sandstone cliff makes it one of the more interesting places we work, because the pest pressures change so much between the top and bottom of the town.
