Pest Control in York

York is a beautiful city but all that history comes with pest problems baked in. The medieval buildings inside the city walls have stone foundations, timber frames and cellars that have been there for hundreds of years and they are riddled with the kind of small gaps and voids that mice love. The Shambles, Stonegate and the streets around the Minster are full of food businesses operating in buildings that were never designed for modern kitchens and keeping mice out of a 15th century timber-framed building is a very different job to proofing a modern house. It takes patience and a good understanding of how the building is put together. The residential streets in Clifton, Heworth and South Bank have a lot of Victorian and Edwardian terraces where mice travel through shared loft spaces and wall cavities and a problem in one house often spreads to the neighbours.

The rivers are the other big factor. The Ouse and the Foss meet right in the middle of the city and York floods regularly. When river levels rise, the rats that live along the banks get pushed inland and we always see a spike in call-outs after heavy rain. The areas most affected tend to be around Fulford, Clementhorpe and the Tang Hall Beck corridor where the ground is low-lying and the water table sits close to the surface. Even when it is not flooding, the riverbanks and green spaces along the Ouse from Rawcliffe down through the city to Bishopthorpe provide ideal cover for rats. They feed on whatever they can find along the way and move into gardens and outbuildings when the opportunity is there.

Wasps nest in the wall cavities and roof spaces of the older houses right across York and we deal with them from late spring through to the autumn. The city also has a growing squirrel problem in areas like Bishopthorpe Road, Acomb and Rawcliffe where mature trees overhang rooftops. Grey squirrels cause a surprising amount of damage once they get into a loft. They chew through electrical cables, tear up insulation and can create a fire risk that most people do not think about until the damage is done.
