Pest Control in Halstead

Halstead is a former mill town in the Colne Valley in north Essex, with the River Colne running right through the middle. The old Courtauld's silk mill still dominates the view from the bridge and the town centre around the High Street and Market Hill has a good collection of Georgian and Victorian buildings alongside some much older timber-framed houses. The Colne is the key factor in rat activity here. Brown rats thrive along the weedy riverbanks, beneath the bridge and around the mill race and they move freely into the gardens and outbuildings of homes that back onto the river. Properties along Trinity Street and the roads running down to the valley floor are regularly affected.

The town has grown with modern housing estates along Colchester Road and around the Kings Meadow area, but the older heart of Halstead around the church and the steep streets leading up from the river sees the most varied pest problems. Period properties with lime mortar walls, cellar voids and wooden window frames develop gaps over time that mice use as entry points. Mouse problems increase noticeably from October onwards as the surrounding farmland is harvested and temperatures drop. The arable fields that surround the town on all sides are a permanent source of field mice heading for shelter.
