Sudbury is a market town in the Stour Valley on the Essex-Suffolk border, famous as the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough and for the water meadows that inspired Constable. The town centre sits on a hill above the river, with the Market Hill and the streets radiating from it lined with a handsome mix of medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings. Below the town, the River Stour and the common lands along its banks create a green corridor that runs right through the heart of the built-up area. That river corridor is the main driver of rat activity in Sudbury. Brown rats thrive along the Stour, using the towpath vegetation and bankside burrows and they move uphill into gardens and buildings along Friars Street, Gainsborough Street and the roads leading down to the water meadows.
