Barnard Castle is a handsome market town in Teesdale, perched above the River Tees in the far west of County Durham where the Pennine hills begin to climb. The town takes its name from the Norman castle ruins that overlook the river and the main street, known as The Bank and Galgate, is lined with stone-built Georgian and Victorian buildings that give the town its distinctive character.
