Ferryhill is a small town on the East Coast Main Line in County Durham, sitting on a ridge between Spennymoor and Newton Aycliffe. Like many towns in this part of Durham, it grew around the coal industry and the terraced streets that housed mining families still form the backbone of the residential area. The rows along Dean Bank, Broom Road and the streets off the main road through town have the typical nineteenth-century construction that pests find easy to exploit.
