Catterick Garrison is the largest British Army base in the world and the surrounding town has grown up to serve it. The garrison sits on the flat ground between Catterick village and Richmond in North Yorkshire, with the River Swale flowing through the valley to the south. The built environment here is unlike most towns. Alongside the military facilities, there are large estates of service family accommodation, modern housing, retail areas and community buildings.
