Henley-on-Thames is a handsome town on the banks of the Thames in the RG postcode area, famous for its regatta and surrounded by the Chiltern Hills. The town centre is full of period buildings, Georgian and older, with tight lanes and courtyards running off the main streets. The river is the defining feature and it brings predictable pest challenges. Brown rats live along the Thames banks and are well used to the mix of natural food from the water and whatever they can scavenge from riverside gardens, boathouses and pub beer gardens. The stretch through Henley is busy with visitors through summer and the outdoor dining and events mean food sources are plentiful for any rat working the riverbank.

Away from the water, the older buildings in the town centre have the usual issues that come with age. Mice find their way into cellars, kitchens and roof spaces through gaps that have developed over centuries of use. Many of the properties share walls and connected roof voids, so a mouse problem in one building can quickly become a problem for its neighbours too. The independent shops, restaurants and hotels along Hart Street and the surrounding roads bring food storage and waste management challenges that need staying on top of to keep rodents from getting a foothold.

The Chiltern beechwoods above the town are home to grey squirrels and they regularly travel down into the residential streets on the hillsides to get into loft spaces. Wasps are a summer staple too, with nests turning up in the old brickwork, under tiles and in the outbuildings behind the High Street properties. The regatta in July and the various festivals through the year bring crowds and temporary food outlets, which can create short-term pest pressure that needs managing. Henley is a beautiful place to live and visit, but its riverside position and stock of older buildings mean pest problems are never far from the surface.
