Buxton is the highest market town in England, sitting at over a thousand feet in the Peak District where the limestone gives way to gritstone and the weather can be harsh. The town is famous for its thermal springs and its elegant Georgian architecture around The Crescent and the Pavilion Gardens, but beyond the town centre the housing is a mix of Victorian terraces climbing the hillsides, inter-war estates and newer builds on the outskirts. The combination of old buildings, cold winters and the surrounding moorland creates a distinctive set of pest issues. Rats are active along the River Wye, which runs through the town and in the drainage under the older streets. The Victorian terraces around the centre and up towards Higher Buxton have aging sewers that give rats routes from underground into properties and we deal with rat control across the town throughout the year.

Mice are driven indoors by the cold more than in most towns. Buxton's elevation means winters are long and hard and mice head for warm buildings earlier in the autumn and stay longer into spring than in lower-lying areas. The stone-built terraces with their shared walls and cellar spaces give mice plenty of routes between properties and a mouse problem in one house often means the neighbours have them too. The newer housing on the edges of town, particularly where it meets the farmland and moorland around Harpur Hill and Fairfield, sees field mice and sometimes rats coming in from the open land.

Wasps nest under the stone roof tiles and in the wall cavities of the older buildings and wasp removal keeps us busy through the summer months even at this altitude. The moorland and farmland around Buxton bring rural pest issues into the fringes of town, with moles in gardens, cluster flies filling loft spaces in autumn and occasional squirrel problems where woodland grows close to housing. The hotels and guest houses in the town centre can pick up bed bugs from the steady flow of visitors and the combination of tourism, old buildings and an exposed upland setting gives Buxton a pest profile that is quite different from most of the towns we work in.
