The High Peak covers the western edge of Derbyshire where the Peak District meets Greater Manchester, with the SK22 and SK23 postcodes taking in towns like New Mills, Whaley Bridge and Chapel-en-le-Frith. The landscape here is dramatic, with steep valleys, fast-flowing rivers and moorland rising above the valley floors. The towns and villages sit in the bottom of these valleys or perched on the hillsides and the stone-built houses that characterise the area are handsome but full of the pest challenges that come with older construction. Rats follow the rivers and streams through the valleys, living in the banks and moving into the edges of the towns where gardens and outbuildings provide food and shelter.

The stone terraces in places like New Mills and Whaley Bridge have shared walls, connected roof spaces and drains that link whole rows of houses together. Mice travel through gaps in the stonework and along pipe runs between properties and a problem in one house is often a problem for the row. The cold winters up here drive mice indoors early and the original stone and lime mortar construction of many buildings means keeping every gap sealed is an ongoing job. The mills and old industrial buildings that have been converted into homes and businesses bring their own challenges, with large roof spaces and complex layouts that give rodents room to move around out of sight.

The moorland above the valleys looks wild and empty, but it supports a surprising amount of wildlife that interacts with the towns below. Wasp nests turn up in the stone walls, under roof slates and in garden sheds through the warmer months and the sheltered valley bottoms seem to concentrate them. Grey squirrels are common in the wooded areas along the rivers, particularly around the Torrs gorge in New Mills and they get into roof spaces in the houses on the valley sides. The High Peak is a stunning part of the country, but the combination of old buildings, water and exposed countryside means pest pressures are a year-round fact of life here.
