Stockport is a large town in Greater Manchester where the Rivers Goyt and Tame meet to form the Mersey. The town has a dramatic setting with a steep-sided valley cutting through the centre and the architecture ranges from the imposing Victorian viaduct and the market hall to rows of terraced housing climbing the hillsides through Edgeley, Heaton Norris and Bredbury. Those rivers and the valleys they run through are at the heart of the rat problem. Rats use the river corridors, canal paths and stream courses as highways through the built-up area and we see activity all along the Goyt and Mersey valleys. The overgrown embankments, old industrial sites and the railway lines that follow the valleys provide cover and food and rats move out from these corridors into the residential streets nearby.

The terraced housing that makes up much of inner Stockport through Edgeley, Shaw Heath and Heaton Norris was built in the Victorian and Edwardian period and these connected houses share party walls and sometimes roof spaces. Mice move between properties through gaps in those shared walls, around pipework and beneath floorboards. A single entry point in one house can lead to mice appearing in kitchens several doors along. The damp conditions in the valley bottom and the ageing drainage beneath these older streets compound the problem, with cracked drains giving rats a route from the sewers into gardens and ground floors. The town centre around Merseyway and the market area has a strong food and drink scene and the waste from restaurants and takeaways needs careful handling to avoid drawing rodents in.

Further out into the suburbs at Bramhall, Hazel Grove, Cheadle and Marple, the housing is more spacious and the pest pressures change. Squirrels are a regular problem in these leafier areas, with mature garden trees giving grey squirrels easy routes onto roofs and into loft spaces. Wasp nests are a summer constant across the whole of Stockport, from the terraces in the centre to the detached houses on the outskirts, turning up in roof spaces, wall cavities and garden sheds throughout the season.
