Mirfield is a town on the River Calder in Kirklees, sitting in the valley between Dewsbury and Huddersfield. The river and the Calder and Hebble Navigation canal run through the town and the valley floor is flanked by wooded hillsides that rise steeply on both sides. That combination of water, woodland and valley bottom creates ideal conditions for rats. The canal towpath and the river margins support a rat population that extends into the gardens of properties along the valley floor and the flooding that periodically affects the lower-lying parts of Mirfield can displace rats and push them into areas they would not normally reach. Homes along Calder Road and the streets near the river crossing are the most frequently affected.

The housing in Mirfield ranges from attractive stone-built Victorian and Edwardian houses along Huddersfield Road and the streets climbing the hillsides to more modest terraces near the centre and some modern estates at the edges. The stone-built houses have the usual challenges with mice: thick walls that develop gaps over time, stone lintels with spaces behind them and old timber floors with gaps around pipe runs. The terraces near the centre have shared walls that let mice move between properties. Even the hillside properties are not immune, because the surrounding woodland provides a ready source of field mice that will always move downhill into buildings when the cold weather arrives.

The wooded slopes above Mirfield are home to grey squirrels, which cause problems in the houses where trees overhang the roofline. Wasp nests turn up in the stone walls and loft spaces of the older properties during summer and the sheltered valley setting can make the wasp season feel longer than in more exposed locations. Mirfield is a town with a lovely riverside setting, but the river and the valley that make it attractive are also what drive much of the pest activity we deal with here.
