Broadstairs is a seaside town on the east Kent coast, squeezed between Margate and Ramsgate on the Isle of Thanet. It has a gentler feel than its neighbours, with the sandy Viking Bay at the centre, rows of Victorian and Edwardian houses climbing the cliffs and a mix of retirement properties and family homes in the streets further back. The coastline means gulls are a constant presence. Herring gulls nest on rooftops across the town, especially on the flat-roofed buildings near the seafront and along the high street. They are noisy, messy and aggressive during nesting season, swooping at people and tearing open bin bags. Seagull control through deterrent systems, netting and egg management is a regular part of our work in Broadstairs and it needs to be in place before the breeding season starts each spring.

Rats are a familiar problem in any coastal town and Broadstairs is no exception. The old Victorian drains under much of the town centre are aging and cracked or collapsed pipes give rats a route from the sewers into buildings. The streets behind the seafront, around the old town and towards the Dumpton Park end all see rat activity. We carry out rat control across Broadstairs and drain surveys often form part of the solution where the same property keeps getting repeat visits. The holiday lets and guest houses along the front can pick up bed bug problems from the turnover of guests through the summer season.

Mice do well in the terraced streets where shared walls and old pipework give them routes between properties and the chalky ground in this part of Kent is easy for them to burrow into around foundations. Wasps nest in the roof spaces and soffits of the older houses every summer and the cliffs and green spaces along the coast support foxes that range into gardens overnight. Broadstairs is quieter than Margate and Ramsgate but it has all the same pest pressures that come with a coastal town built on Victorian foundations.
