Margate is one of Kent's best-known seaside towns sitting on the north-eastern tip of the Isle of Thanet in the CT9 postcode area. The town has seen a revival in recent years with the Turner Contemporary gallery and a growing creative scene but it still has large areas of older housing including Georgian and Victorian terraces in Cliftonville and around the Old Town. These older buildings present a constant pest challenge. Rats are common across Margate and the aging drainage underneath the town gives them easy access from the sewers to the surface. The streets around the harbour and the denser residential areas of Cliftonville see some of the highest levels of rat activity and the mix of food businesses along the seafront adds to the problem.

Mouse call-outs are steady throughout the year in Margate. The Victorian terraces and converted flats that make up much of the housing in Cliftonville and the town centre have plenty of gaps where mice get in. Shared walls between terraced houses let mice travel freely and in buildings that have been split into flats the voids between floors become highways for rodents. The seasonal nature of parts of Margate's economy means some properties sit empty during the winter months and mice will move into unoccupied buildings quickly when there is no disturbance to keep them away.

Seagulls are one of Margate's biggest pest headaches. The town centre and seafront are home to large numbers of herring gulls that nest on rooftops and become fiercely protective during the breeding season. They swoop at people carrying food and the mess from their droppings damages buildings and makes pavements slippery.
