Herne Bay is a seaside town on the north Kent coast in the CT6 postcode, with a long seafront, a traditional High Street running back from the shore and residential areas stretching inland toward the villages of Herne and Broomfield. The town has a wide mix of properties, from the Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the seafront to inter-war semis and modern estates further back. The coastal position brings its own pest challenges. Seagulls are a noisy and ongoing problem along the front and in the streets closest to the beach, nesting on flat roofs and chimney stacks and becoming aggressive during the breeding season from April through to August. The fish and chip shops, cafes and beachfront food outlets provide a constant food supply that keeps them coming back.

Away from the coast, rats are the most common call-out. The older parts of town have aging drains that give brown rats access to move between properties underground and they surface in gardens, around bin stores and near anywhere food waste builds up. The allotments and green spaces that run through the town act as corridors for rats moving between areas. Mice are equally active, particularly in the Victorian terraces where mouse entry points have developed around old window frames, crumbling pointing and where original services enter the buildings. The Downs above the town to the south are chalk grassland and farmland and rodents move freely between the countryside and the built-up area.

Summer brings wasp problems right across Herne Bay. The warm, sheltered gardens behind the seafront terraces are prime nesting territory and nests in loft spaces and wall cavities are a weekly occurrence from July onward. The bed and breakfasts and holiday lets along the front can also see bed bug issues during the busy season when turnover of guests is highest. Herne Bay is a proper seaside town with all the pest pressures that come from combining older buildings, the coast and a busy visitor economy.
