Holmfirth is a small town nestled in a steep-sided valley in the HD9 postcode of West Yorkshire, where the River Holme and Ribble meet among the Pennine hills. The town is famous as the filming location for Last of the Summer Wine and the stone-built streets climbing the valley sides give it a character quite unlike anywhere else. Those stone terraces and cottages are handsome, but the traditional construction brings pest challenges. Rats follow the River Holme through the centre of town, living in the banks and moving into the properties closest to the water. The flooding that has affected Holmfirth over the years pushes rats out of their riverside burrows and into buildings and the narrow valley concentrates the problem.

The stone terraces on the hillsides have shared walls, connected roof spaces and aging drains that give mice and rats routes between properties. Mice get in through gaps in the stonework, around window frames and where pointing has crumbled. The cold winters at this altitude drive them indoors early and once they find a warm spot behind a wall or in a roof space they stay. The moorland above the valley and the woodland along the river support a range of wildlife that interacts with the town below. Grey squirrels are common in the wooded sections of the valley and get into roof spaces in the houses on the hillsides. Wasp nests turn up in the stone walls, under roof slates and in garden sheds through the summer. The flea season can be a problem in homes with pets, especially where dogs are walked on the moorland and bring fleas back from sheep and other wildlife. Holmfirth is a beautiful and distinctive town, but its position in a narrow Pennine valley with running water and old stone buildings keeps pest control work constant.
