Ashtead is a Surrey village at the foot of the North Downs, sitting between Leatherhead and Epsom with Ashtead Common stretching away to the north. The common is one of the largest areas of ancient woodland in the south east, a National Nature Reserve with veteran oak trees that have been standing for centuries. That woodland is home to a thriving grey squirrel population and the houses along the northern edge of the village regularly deal with squirrels getting into their loft spaces. The animals leap from overhanging branches onto roofs and chew through soffits and fascia boards to get inside. The village itself has a mix of Victorian cottages along The Street, inter-war houses on the roads leading up to the common and newer developments around the edges. Mice are common across all of them, though the entry points vary. The older cottages have worn mortar, gaps around window frames and original timber floors with voids beneath them. The newer houses see mice coming in around meter boxes and service penetrations in the outer wall.
