Tenterden is a beautiful small town in the TN postcode area of Kent, sitting on a ridge in the Weald with views across the flat marshland to the south. The wide High Street is lined with white weatherboarded and tile-hung buildings dating from the medieval period through to the Georgian era and the town has a prosperous, well-kept feel. Those older buildings look wonderful but they also have the gaps and imperfections that pests take advantage of. The timber frames shift over the centuries, weatherboard cladding develops gaps and the lime mortar between the older brickwork weathers away. Wasp nests are a summer fixture, appearing in the old wall cavities and roof spaces of the period buildings in the centre and in the garden sheds and outbuildings of the newer properties. The warm, south-facing aspect of the ridge and the rich insect life on the surrounding farmland keep colonies well fed. Squirrels are also present, with the mature trees along the High Street and in the churchyard giving them access to nearby roofs.
