Swanage is a small coastal town on the eastern tip of the Isle of Purbeck, sheltered in a wide bay with the Jurassic Coast cliffs stretching away to the south. The town is relatively isolated, reached by a single road across the Purbeck Hills or by the chain ferry from Sandbanks and this setting gives it a character quite different from the larger Dorset towns. The older streets around the High Street, the Mill Pond and the seafront have a mix of stone cottages, Victorian guesthouses and converted buildings, while the residential areas climb the hillside towards Herston and along the Ulwell Road. Mice are a year-round problem in Swanage. The older stone properties in the centre have all the usual entry points through weathered masonry and the rural surroundings mean that field mice are always close to the edges of town.

The Mill Pond and the stream running through the town centre attract rats and the harbour area with its fishing boats, bait stores and food waste adds another draw. The seafront cafes and restaurants generate enough waste to keep rats interested, especially around the bin collection areas behind the Shore Road and High Street businesses. The surrounding farmland on the Purbeck ridge and the open downland above the town also support rat numbers that move closer to buildings as the seasons change. Properties on the edges of town towards the Durlston area and along the Priests Way footpath are more exposed to this kind of rural rodent movement.

Seagulls are one of Swanage's most visible pest issues. Herring gulls nest on rooftops across the town centre and become aggressive during the breeding season, swooping at people and tearing open bin bags in search of food. The flat-roofed commercial buildings near the beach and the Victorian terraces along the seafront are prime nesting territory. Wasp removal is a summer fixture too, with nests in stone garden walls, loft spaces and the older outbuildings that dot the gardens of properties across the town. Swanage's holiday accommodation generates additional pest control work, with guest houses and holiday lets needing to stay on top of any problems during the busy visitor season.
