Wareham is an ancient town in Dorset, built within Saxon walls on a spit of land between the River Frome and the River Piddle where they flow into Poole Harbour. The town's position between two rivers and at the edge of one of the largest natural harbours in the world means water is never far away and that brings rats. The riverbanks, the quay and the marshes to the south of town all support healthy rat numbers and from the waterfront they spread into the residential and commercial streets. Rat control is a constant need in the older part of town inside the walls, where the buildings date back centuries in some cases and the drainage buildings and drainage has aged accordingly. Cracked sewer pipes are a common entry route and a CCTV drain survey is often the first step in working out how rats are getting in.

The town centre along North Street and South Street is compact and attractive, with independent shops, pubs and cafes that draw visitors especially during the summer. The food waste from these businesses adds to the attractions for rodents. Mice are common in the older cottages and townhouses within the walls, where thick stone walls and ancient timber frames have settled and shifted over the centuries, creating gaps that mice find easily. The residential streets beyond the walls include post-war and modern housing where mice still turn up but tend to come in through different routes, usually around utility entries and where extensions join the main building.

Wareham's proximity to Poole Harbour and the Purbeck heathland shapes the wider pest picture too. Wasp nests are common in the sandy ground around the heathland edges and in the outbuildings of the older properties. The harbour and the quay attract gulls and while they are not as much of a problem here as in some coastal towns, nesting gulls on rooftops are an increasing issue.
