Coombe is one of the most affluent residential areas in the Kingston upon Thames borough, known for its large detached houses set in spacious, heavily landscaped grounds. The roads wind through mature trees and tall hedges and many of the properties are hidden behind gates and driveways. While the homes are often beautifully maintained, the sheer amount of greenery and the size of the gardens create perfect conditions for certain pests. Grey squirrels are a major issue across Coombe. The old oaks, beeches and chestnuts growing close to rooflines give squirrels easy access and once they get into a loft space they will chew through insulation, stored items and electrical wiring. Mice also move freely between the gardens and houses here. Even well-built modern homes can develop gaps as they settle or where extensions meet the original structure and mice will exploit anything wider than about 6mm. Rats are less common than in the more urban parts of Kingston, but they are still present, following the drainage network and moving along the wooded fringes of the area.
