Hersham is a residential area in the KT postcode between Walton-on-Thames and Esher in Surrey, with a village green, a parade of shops and streets of mostly inter-war and post-war housing spreading out from the centre. The River Mole runs nearby before joining the Thames and the network of streams, drainage channels and green spaces in the area creates conditions where rats do well. Brown rats follow the watercourses and move between the open spaces and the back gardens of residential properties, particularly where bird feeders, compost bins or pet food provide an easy meal.
