Ash is a village in the eastern corner of Kent, spread out along the lanes between Sandwich and Wingham on the flat, fertile land behind the coast. The village has a scattering of older Kentish farmhouses, cottages and some newer infill housing and the surrounding arable fields dominate the landscape in every direction. Farming and pest pressure go hand in hand in a place like this. Brown rats are drawn to grain stores, barns and the field margins where spilt crop and stubble provide easy feeding. From there they move into domestic gardens and outbuildings and eventually try the main house if access is available. Mice follow the same pattern, moving indoors as the autumn temperature drops and the fields are ploughed.
