Capel is a village south of Tonbridge in the Kent countryside, sitting among hop gardens, orchards and the gentle farmland of the Low Weald. The village has a church, a few farms and a scattering of houses along the lanes and Five Oak Green at its eastern end brings a bit more activity with its own small community. The agricultural landscape is the defining feature here and it drives the pest problems we see. Rats are well suited to the mix of arable fields, orchards and the hop gardens that still exist in pockets around the village. They feed on grain and fallen fruit and nest in the hedgerows and farm buildings that dot the area. We deal with rat problems across Capel throughout the year, with autumn being the busiest time as the harvest finishes and rats look for new sources of food and shelter.

The River Medway and its flood plain lie just to the north of Capel and the low-lying damp ground along the river attracts rats in particular. Properties near the river or the streams that feed into it need to be vigilant about keeping outbuildings sealed and vegetation cleared away from the house. Mice are another winter visitor, coming in from the fields through gaps in walls and around pipes. Mouse control in the older buildings around Capel involves finding and blocking the entry points as well as dealing with any mice already inside.

The orchards and hop gardens attract wasps in the summer and nests turn up in the oast houses, barns and older farm buildings that are part of the village landscape. The traditional Kentish construction of many buildings here, with tile-hung walls and peg-tiled roofs, provides plenty of gaps that wasps can use to get into wall cavities and roof voids.
