Castle Hill is an area on the western edge of Hastings, close to where the town meets the countryside heading towards Battle and the 1066 Country. The houses here climb the slopes above the town, with a mix of older terraces lower down and newer development higher up. The hillside location gives many properties views across the town and out to sea, but it also means the gardens are often steep and bordered by rough ground and woodland that provides perfect cover for pests. Rats use the scrubby vegetation and the footpaths that criss-cross the hillside to move between the open countryside above and the denser housing below. We handle rat control across Castle Hill and properties with overgrown gardens or those backing onto the wooded slopes tend to see the most activity.

The older properties lower down the hill share the same Victorian drainage issues found across much of Hastings. Cracked and damaged sewers give rats access to the underground pipe network and from there they can pop up in gardens and even inside houses. A drain survey is often the most useful first step when dealing with ongoing rat problems in the terraced streets. Mice are also common in the older houses, where shared party walls and suspended floors provide routes for mice to travel between properties.

The coastal location means seagulls are a presence on rooftops across Castle Hill during the breeding season. Herring gulls nest on chimney stacks and in the valleys between roofs and their noise and mess can be hard to live with. We fit deterrent systems to keep them off. Wasp nests are a summer regular in the older roof spaces and in the banks and retaining walls that are a feature of the steep gardens on the hillside.
