Charing is a village at the foot of the North Downs along the old Pilgrim's Way between Ashford and Maidstone, with a high street that climbs from the A20 up towards the ruins of the Archbishop's Palace. The village has a good mix of older buildings, some dating back centuries, alongside more modern housing and the combination of a busy main road, local shops and nearby farmland creates varied pest pressures. Rats are one of the more common problems we deal with in Charing. The fields and orchards on the lower ground south of the village support rat numbers year-round and they follow the hedgerows and ditches into the village. The older properties near the top of the high street and around the church have cellars and outbuildings where rat activity often starts before spreading to the house itself.

The A20 corridor through Charing brings commercial activity and food businesses and the waste associated with these attracts pests to the centre of the village. Mice are common in the older buildings along the high street, where centuries-old walls have developed gaps and cracks that provide easy access.
