The marsh here is criss-crossed by drainage ditches, sewers and water channels that have been maintained for centuries to keep this reclaimed land dry enough for farming. Sheep graze the fields and the vast, open skies give the place a character quite unlike anywhere else in Kent. This low-lying, damp terrain is prime habitat for rats, which use the drainage network as highways to move between fields and the handful of properties in the area.
