Fairlight Cove is a residential area spread along the clifftop east of Hastings, developed mainly in the mid-twentieth century as a seaside retreat. The properties here are predominantly bungalows and detached houses set in generous plots, many with sea views across the Channel. The sandstone cliffs below are prone to erosion and the coastline here has a wild, unspoilt character quite different from the built-up seafronts further west. The gardens are often long-standing with mature shrubs and hedging and this dense vegetation provides cover for rats and mice moving between properties. Rat control is a regular requirement along the Cove, as the cliff edges and overgrown boundaries offer plenty of nesting spots.

The bungalow-style construction that dominates Fairlight Cove means that roof spaces tend to be lower and more accessible than in taller houses and this makes them attractive to both rodents and nesting birds. Grey squirrels push through soffit vents and fascia gaps to set up home in lofts and once inside they cause damage quickly. Seagulls also favour the flat and low-pitched roofs for nesting and herring gulls in particular can be aggressive when defending their young. Seagull deterrent systems including spikes and netting can be fitted to prevent birds from settling on rooftops and causing mess and noise.

The warm, south-facing aspect of many Fairlight Cove properties makes them prime spots for wasp nests during summer. Nests appear in wall cavities, under roof tiles, in sheds and sometimes in the ground on sunny banks in gardens. A wasp nest can grow from a handful of insects in spring to several thousand by August and late-season wasps are more likely to sting.
