Hearnden Green is a small rural spot tucked away in the Weald of Kent, surrounded by farmland and patches of ancient woodland. The handful of houses here are mostly older properties with generous gardens, outbuildings and hedgerows running along the boundaries. That mix of open countryside and sheltered buildings creates the kind of conditions where rats do well. Brown rats follow the field margins and hedgerows, moving between farm buildings and residential gardens, especially through autumn and winter when the weather pushes them to look for warmth and food closer to homes.

With so much green space around, mice are equally at home here. Field mice are active year-round in the surrounding fields and will readily move into roof spaces and garages once temperatures drop. The older construction of many local properties means there are gaps around pipes, under doors and along rooflines that make it easy for them to get inside. Mouse activity often goes unnoticed until droppings appear in a kitchen cupboard or loft insulation gets disturbed. On the warmer side of things, the orchards and garden fruit trees that are common in this part of Kent attract wasps from midsummer onward. Nests turn up in shed roofs, under eaves and buried in soft ground and they can become a real problem by August and September when the colonies are at their largest.

The woodland edges around Hearnden Green also mean grey squirrels are never far away. They are happy to cross from the tree canopy into roof spaces, chewing through fascia boards and gnawing on wiring once inside. If you hear scratching or thumping in the loft during daylight hours, squirrels are usually the cause. Being this deep into the Kent countryside brings a certain charm, but it also means living close to the wildlife that thrives in hedgerows, barns and woodland. Keeping on top of pest problems early is always easier than dealing with something that has had weeks to get comfortable.
