High Brooms is a residential area on the southern side of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, centred around the railway station and the streets climbing the hillside between Southborough and the town centre. The neighbourhood has a mix of Victorian terraces built for the railway and brickworks that once operated here, along with some newer housing on filled-in industrial sites. The older terraces are tightly packed with shared walls and connected roof voids, which means mouse problems often affect several houses at the same time. Mice move through gaps in party walls and along pipe runs and the original construction of these properties means there are plenty of routes available to them.

The railway line running through High Brooms is a factor in rat activity. The embankments and the scrubby ground alongside the tracks provide cover and nesting sites for brown rats and from there they move into the back gardens of the houses that border the line. The area also has some green spaces and wooded pockets that connect through to the wider countryside around Tunbridge Wells, giving rats and other wildlife routes into the residential streets. Bins and food waste behind the shops along the High Brooms Road add to the draw.

The Victorian houses in High Brooms have the kind of features that wasps find attractive for nesting. Gaps under the eaves, in old brickwork and behind fascia boards all provide entry points for wasp colonies and nests in loft spaces are a regular summer occurrence. The hillside position means some properties have elevated gardens with retaining walls and these south-facing banks are popular spots for ground-nesting wasps too. High Brooms has plenty of character from its industrial past and the older buildings and railway setting create the kind of environment where pest activity is a constant background feature.
