High Halden is a village on the edge of the Weald in Kent, sitting on higher ground above the flat expanse of the Low Weald and the Romney Marsh beyond. The village has a church, a pub and a cluster of houses around the crossroads, with farms and scattered properties spreading out along the lanes. The mix of older houses, converted barns and farm buildings means rat problems here are closely tied to the farming activity around the village. Brown rats use the hedgerows and drainage ditches as routes between fields and buildings and anywhere that grain, animal feed or waste is stored becomes a magnet for them.

The older cottages and farmhouses in High Halden often have gaps that have developed over centuries of use. Doors that do not sit flush, crumbling pointing around windows and openings where original timbers have shifted all provide ways for mice to get inside. Field mice are active in the surrounding land year-round and they move into the warmer interior of buildings as soon as autumn arrives. Once inside they breed in the quiet spaces behind walls and above ceilings and the first signs are usually droppings or the sound of scratching at night.

The elevated position of the village means it catches the summer sun and the sheltered gardens and south-facing walls are favoured spots for wasp nests. Nests appear in loft spaces, under eaves, in outbuildings and sometimes buried in the lawn. The woodland edges around the village are home to grey squirrels that make their way into the nearest roof spaces when the opportunity arises. High Halden has a proper rural character and living on the edge of open countryside means the boundary between wildlife and domestic life is never very clear. Early attention to any signs of pest activity is always the best approach.
