Hildenborough is a village between Tonbridge and Sevenoaks in Kent, sitting in the valley of the Hilden Brook with the greensand ridge rising to the south. The village has a station on the main line to London and a centre around the crossroads with shops and a church and the housing ranges from older cottages near the core to 1930s semis and more modern developments further out. The Hilden Brook and the network of streams and ditches in the valley floor create ideal conditions for brown rats. They live along the watercourses and move into village gardens, particularly where properties back onto the brook or the green spaces that follow it.

The mix of building ages in Hildenborough means pest problems vary from one street to the next. The older properties near the village centre have the kinds of gaps around original features that mice find irresistible, while the newer builds tend to be tighter but not immune. Mice get in through air bricks, gaps at the base of cavity walls and anywhere that services pass through the building envelope. The farmland and orchards surrounding the village keep rodent numbers high in the area and the boundary between the countryside and the village is where much of the activity concentrates.

The greensand ridge to the south is covered in woodland and grey squirrels from those woods regularly turn up in the roof spaces of houses on the higher ground. Wasps nest in the usual places through summer, with lofts, sheds, hedge bases and the soft sandy ground on the ridge all providing nesting sites. Hildenborough is a village that still feels properly rural despite its good connections to London and the pest pressures from the surrounding countryside are a natural part of that.
