Ide Hill is one of the highest villages in Kent, perched on the greensand ridge south of Sevenoaks with views across the Weald stretching for miles. The village has a green, a pub, a church and a scattering of houses, with National Trust woodland at Emmetts Garden and the surrounding countryside creating a heavily wooded setting. That woodland is the defining factor in pest activity here. Grey squirrels are common in the trees that surround and overhang many properties and squirrel problems in roof spaces are one of the most regular call-outs. They chew through fascia boards and soffits to get in and once inside they cause damage to wiring, insulation and stored items.

Brown rats are active in the woodland floor and along the streams and ditches that drain the ridge and they move into the larger gardens where compost, fruit trees and outbuildings provide food and shelter. Mice are equally busy, particularly in the older properties where traditional construction has developed gaps over the years. The exposed hilltop position means buildings take more weather than those in the sheltered valleys and that weathering opens up gaps around tiles, mortar joints and window frames that mice use as entry points.

The sandy greensand soil provides good burrowing ground for ground-nesting wasps and above-ground nests in lofts, sheds and garden structures are common through the summer. The elevated position and south-facing aspect of many gardens on the ridge create warm, sheltered spots that wasp colonies thrive in. Ide Hill is a beautiful village in a stunning setting, but the combination of dense woodland, older buildings and exposed hilltop conditions creates a pest environment that needs attention through every season.
