Pest Control in Iden

Iden is a small village on a hill overlooking the Rother Levels in East Sussex, sitting between Rye and Northiam. The village has a church, a few farms and a cluster of houses, with the flat reclaimed marshland stretching out below and the River Rother winding through the levels. That wet, low-lying landscape is the main driver of pest problems in the area. Brown rats thrive in the ditchbanks and field margins across the levels and they move up the hill to the village when the low ground floods in winter or when food sources in gardens and farm buildings draw them in. The farms around the village with their stored grain and animal feed also support steady rat numbers.

The older houses in Iden have the kinds of gaps that develop in buildings over time and mice use these openings around doors, windows and service entries to get inside. Field mice are active in the surrounding farmland and make the seasonal move into buildings through autumn. The elevated position of the village on its hilltop means the houses themselves stay above the worst of the damp, but the proximity of the marshes below means rodent pressure from the levels is always present.

In summer, wasp nests appear in outbuildings, under roof tiles and in the ground along banks and hedgerows. The south-facing slope of the hill catches the sun and the sheltered gardens provide the warm conditions that wasp colonies need. Iden looks out across one of the most atmospheric landscapes in East Sussex, with Rye visible on its own hilltop across the marsh. That setting is part of what makes the village special, but the wet farmland and waterways below are the source of much of the pest activity that reaches up to the houses on the hill.
