Knatts Valley is a quiet, secluded valley in the North Downs of west Kent, running between the chalk ridge and the lower greensand. Mice use openings around doors, windows and service entries to get inside and field mice from the surrounding chalk grassland and farmland make their annual move into the warmth of buildings through autumn. The woodland on the valley sides is home to grey squirrels and they cross from the canopy into roof spaces where trees overhang buildings. The sheltered, sunken nature of the valley means it stays warmer than the exposed ridgeline above, which tends to concentrate wildlife activity.

Wasp nests are common in the chalk banks, in outbuildings and under eaves through the summer. The chalk soil provides good burrowing ground for ground-nesting wasps and above-ground nests in lofts and sheds are just as regular. Knatts Valley is one of the hidden corners of the Kent Downs and its secluded, rural character means the wildlife that thrives in the surrounding landscape is a constant companion. Keeping buildings well sealed and acting early on any signs of pest activity is the most effective way to manage it.
