Stanford is a small village in the TN postcode area of Kent, sitting in the shadow of the North Downs close to the Channel Tunnel terminal at Folkestone. The village has a quiet, rural character with a cluster of older houses around the church, some newer properties and farmland stretching out in every direction. The proximity to the Downs and the farmland shapes the pest problems. Rats live along the field edges, in hedgerows and around farm buildings and they move towards the village when food sources draw them in. Homes with bird tables, compost bins or pet food left outside are the usual first stops and from gardens and outbuildings it is a short move to the house itself.

The older cottages and houses around the centre of Stanford have the kind of features that look lovely but let pests in. Original door frames with worn thresholds, gaps in the brickwork where render has cracked and spaces under eaves where tiles do not sit flush all provide entry points for mice. We see mice across the village from the autumn onward as they look for warmth, though homes with ongoing gaps can have them in any season. The downland and grassland around Stanford support a good insect population, which in turn feeds wasp colonies through the summer. Nests appear in roof spaces, under tiles, in stone wall cavities and in outbuildings. The dry, chalky soil on the Downs also makes it easy for wasps to build underground nests in old rabbit burrows or gaps in the chalk. Squirrels are less of an issue here than in the more wooded parts of Kent, but any property with mature trees close by should watch for them.
