West Kingsdown is a village on the North Downs ridge in Kent, straddling the A20 between Brands Hatch and Farningham. The village has grown over the decades from a small settlement into a spread-out community with housing from many periods, including older cottages near the church, 1960s and 70s estates and some newer builds. The elevated position on the chalk ridge means the surrounding land is a mix of farmland, woodland and scrubby downland and this landscape supports plenty of pest activity. Rats live in the hedgerows and field margins around the village and they move towards houses in the cooler months when food becomes scarcer outside.

The mixed age of housing means the entry points for mice vary across the village. The older cottages have gaps around timber frames, loose mortar and original window frames that no longer seal properly. The 1960s and 70s houses have their own weaknesses, with some panel construction developing cracks around window reveals and service entries over time. The newer builds are generally better sealed but still vulnerable around utility entries and where extensions join the main structure. Mice are active year-round but peak in the autumn and winter and in a village surrounded by farmland the supply from outside is constant.

The woodland and downland around West Kingsdown support grey squirrels that regularly get into loft spaces. Squirrel control is something we carry out in this part of Kent fairly often. Wasp nest removal is a reliable summer job, with the range of outbuildings, sheds and varied rooflines across the village providing no shortage of nesting opportunities. The rural setting of West Kingsdown is part of its appeal, but it means pest management is a regular part of life on the North Downs.
