Wrotham is a historic village at the foot of the North Downs in Kent, positioned where the ancient Pilgrims' Way crosses the main road between Maidstone and Sevenoaks. The village has a handsome centre with a medieval church, timber-framed houses and an old market square, surrounded by more modern housing that has grown up along the main routes. Above the village, the chalk escarpment of the Downs rises steeply, covered in beech woodland and scrub, while to the south the land drops into the Medway valley. This meeting of upland and lowland creates a varied environment where different pests thrive in different seasons.

The older properties in Wrotham's village centre are some of the most pest-prone in the area. Half-timbered buildings, ragstone walls and Victorian brickwork all develop the kinds of gaps and cracks over time that rodents exploit without hesitation. Mice are a constant issue in these older structures, finding their way in through spaces that are almost invisible to the untrained eye. The nearby farmland and the green corridor along the Downs also support healthy rat numbers and rat activity increases during autumn when agricultural disturbance and colder weather push rodents towards buildings. Properties along the village edges where gardens meet fields are most affected.

The beech woods above Wrotham are home to large grey squirrel numbers and these animals regularly venture into the village, accessing lofts through overhanging branches and gaps in roof structures. Squirrel damage to wiring and insulation can be serious if not addressed promptly. In summer, wasp nests appear across the village in lofts, garden sheds and wall cavities.
