Wye is a well-known village on the Great Stour river between Ashford and Canterbury, overlooked by the dramatic chalk crown carved into the Downs above. The village has a strong identity built around its historic church, the old agricultural college and a compact centre of period houses, Georgian frontages and brick-and-flint cottages. Beyond the village core, newer housing and farmland stretch across the Stour valley floor, while the chalk escarpment of the Wye National Nature Reserve rises to the north. This blend of river valley, chalk downland and mixed housing creates diverse pest conditions that our technicians know well.

The Great Stour flowing through Wye is the primary driver of rat activity in the village. Brown rats use the riverbanks as travel corridors, moving between the water margins and the gardens that border the river. Properties backing onto the Stour or its flood plain are most at risk, but rats can follow drainage networks and ditches well into the village centre. Rat control in a riverside setting needs to account for the ongoing pressure from the watercourse rather than treating each property in isolation. Mice are also common across the village, with older properties in the conservation area offering the period features and small gaps that mice find so easy to exploit. Mouse infestations peak in autumn and winter when outdoor conditions become less welcoming.

The chalk downland above Wye supports different pest patterns. Rabbit activity is high on the thin chalk soils and the woodland fringes harbour grey squirrels that sometimes wander into village properties. During summer, wasp nests are a regular occurrence in the lofts and outbuildings of the older houses. Flea problems also increase in warmer weather, often linked to pets that pick up parasites while walking along the river path or through the nature reserve.
