Pest Control in Caldicot

Caldicot is a growing town on the Gwent Levels, just a few miles from the Severn crossings and the English border. The flat, low-lying land around the town was reclaimed from marshland centuries ago and the network of drainage ditches and reens that cross-cross the Levels create ideal conditions for rats. These waterways run right up to the edges of the housing estates and rats use them as highways to move between the open land and the built-up areas of town. Properties on the eastern and southern fringes of Caldicot where the houses meet the Levels tend to see the most rat activity.

The town itself is a mix of the older village centre around the castle and church and the much larger post-war and modern housing estates that have turned Caldicot from a village into a small town. The newer homes were built with cavity walls and mice find their way into these cavities through air bricks, gaps around utility connections and any crack or hole that has opened up as the buildings settle. The flat terrain and open surroundings mean there is little shelter from wind and mice are quick to seek warmth inside houses as autumn arrives.

Caldicot Castle and its surrounding country park provide a lovely green space in the middle of town, but the mature trees and grassland also support grey squirrels and other wildlife that can cause problems for nearby properties. Wasp nests are found each summer in roof spaces, garden sheds and the gaps under roof tiles across the town. The proximity of farmland on all sides of Caldicot means that agricultural pest pressure from rats and mice in the fields spills into the residential areas, with activity picking up noticeably after harvest time when the crops are cleared and cover disappears.
