Pest Control in New Tredegar

New Tredegar is a small valley community in the upper Rhymney Valley, stretched out along the narrow valley floor between steep wooded hillsides. Like many of the Valleys towns, it grew up around coal mining and the terraced houses that line the main road through the village were built for the miners and their families. These terraces are tightly packed with shared party walls and common drainage and rats exploit this connected layout to move between properties underground. The old drains beneath these streets were built to serve a much larger population than lives here today and sections that have cracked or collapsed give rats easy access to the pipe network.

The valley sides rise steeply on both sides of the village and the hillside scrub, rough grassland and patches of woodland come right down to the backs of the houses. This means mice from the hillsides have a very short journey to reach warmth and food indoors and the number of mouse calls we get from New Tredegar picks up sharply once the cold weather arrives in autumn. The older houses have plenty of entry points where stonework has deteriorated, around old window and door frames and where service pipes pass through walls. Some properties here still have the old coal cellars and outside coal sheds that provide ideal shelter for both mice and rats.

The streams that come down from the hills on both sides of the valley can bring rats closer to homes and the damp conditions in the valley bottom create an environment where insects thrive too. Wasp nests are common in the roof spaces and stone outbuildings of properties along the terraces each summer. The surrounding hillsides with their rough grazing and bracken also support field mice and voles that move into homes and outbuildings as food becomes harder to find in the wild during winter.
