Pest Control in Monmouth

Monmouth is an attractive market town at the meeting point of three rivers: the Monnow, the Trothy and the Wye. All that water makes it one of the more challenging towns in the area for rat control. The rivers and their wooded banks provide perfect cover and food for rats and the animals move freely between the waterside and the town. Properties along Monnow Street and the roads nearest the rivers see the most activity and when the Monnow or Wye floods in winter it pushes rats into the town centre and the residential streets on higher ground. The medieval Monnow Bridge is a landmark but the riverbanks either side of it are also well-used rat territory.

The town centre has a good mix of independent shops, pubs and restaurants clustered around Agincourt Square and along Monnow Street and the food waste from these businesses creates feeding opportunities for rodents. The older buildings along these streets have thick stone walls, cellars and hidden spaces behind shopfronts that give mice plenty of places to nest. Many of the properties above the shops are residential and mice move between the commercial and living spaces through the voids and ducts that run through these old buildings.

Beyond the town centre, the housing areas at Overmonnow, Osbaston and Wyesham see a different balance of pests. These residential streets are closer to open countryside and the woodland that surrounds Monmouth on all sides and field mice, grey squirrels and wasps are the most common problems. The town is almost enclosed by trees, with the Kymin hill to the east and dense woodland along the Wye Valley to the south and this means wildlife is never far from any property in Monmouth. Wasp nests are a regular summer problem in the older buildings and in the outbuildings and garages of the newer housing alike.
