Pest Control in Crickhowell

Crickhowell is a small town on the banks of the River Usk in the Brecon Beacons, surrounded by green hills and farmland. The town is built mainly of local stone and the older buildings along the High Street and Bridge Street have been standing for centuries. These stone properties develop gaps in their mortar joints as they age and mice are experts at finding every tiny opening. The older houses often have thick walls with hidden voids, flagstone floors with gaps beneath and cellars that provide cool dark spaces where mice can nest undisturbed for months before anyone notices the signs.

The River Usk runs right past the town, crossed by the medieval bridge that is one of Crickhowell's best-known landmarks. The river and its wooded banks support a healthy rat population and properties along the streets closest to the water see regular rat activity. The gardens and allotments near the river provide food and shelter and when the Usk floods in winter it pushes rats up into the town looking for dry ground. The smaller streams that come down from Table Mountain and the surrounding hills also bring rats and mice closer to homes as they follow the water into the built-up area.

Crickhowell is surrounded by farmland on all sides and the sheep and cattle pastures that come right up to the edge of town support field mice, voles and rats that move into properties when food gets scarce in the fields. The mature trees and hedgerows throughout the town and along the river give grey squirrels plenty of routes to move between gardens and occasionally into loft spaces. Wasp nests turn up in the stone outbuildings, garden sheds and roof spaces of properties across the town each summer and the warm dry cavities in old stone walls are favourite nesting spots.
