Bourne is a quiet market town on the edge of the Lincolnshire Fens, where the slightly higher ground of the limestone belt meets the flat fenland to the east. The Bourne Eau, a chalk stream, runs through the centre of town and out into the Fens and this watercourse creates a corridor for rats to travel between the open countryside and the built-up area. Properties along the Eau and near the town centre waterways see the most rat activity and the old stone walls and bridges along the stream provide shelter. The town centre around North Street, South Street and the Market Place has a mix of older limestone and brick buildings alongside more modern shopfronts.
