Spalding is a market town in the heart of the South Holland district of Lincolnshire, surrounded by some of the flattest and most fertile farmland in England. The River Welland runs right through the centre of town and a network of drainage channels and dykes criss-crosses the landscape in every direction. All that water and the rich agricultural land create ideal conditions for rats and Spalding sees plenty of them. Rats move along the river banks, through the drainage ditches and across the fields that border the town on all sides. Properties on the edges of Spalding, backing onto farmland or close to the Coronation Channel, are the ones that get hit first, but rats work their way into the town centre readily enough through the older drains beneath the streets.

The town centre around the Market Place and along Hall Place and Sheep Market has a mix of older brick and rendered buildings, many with original features that leave gaps pests can exploit. Mice are a problem in these older properties and in the residential streets spreading out from the centre, where the houses range from Victorian terraces to 1960s and 70s estates. The food processing and agricultural businesses around Spalding also contribute to the pest picture. Grain stores, packhouses and food factories all attract rats and mice and the lorry movements between these sites can spread pests across the area. In summer, wasp nests turn up in roof spaces, wall cavities and garden sheds across the town. The warm conditions in the fens seem to suit them and we treat nests in Spalding from late spring right through the season.
