Skegness is Lincolnshire's best-known seaside resort, stretching along the coast with a busy seafront, amusement parks and holiday camps that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer. All those visitors mean food and food means pests. The gulls along the Skegness seafront are fearless, having learned over generations that tourists are an easy source of chips, ice cream and sandwiches. They nest on the flat roofs of the seafront buildings, the amusement arcades and the hotels along the Promenade and their droppings and aggressive behaviour during the breeding season are a constant headache for businesses trying to keep their premises clean and welcoming.

Behind the seafront, the town has a grid of streets with a mix of guest houses, holiday lets and permanent residential properties. The older buildings around Lumley Road and Roman Bank have the brick walls and Victorian construction that give mice access through worn mortar, gaps around windows and spaces where services pass through walls. The holiday accommodation in particular can develop pest problems during the winter when properties stand empty and cold for months. Mice move in when things are quiet and can be well settled by the time the season starts again. Rats are active around the bins and service areas behind the food outlets and the sheer volume of food waste produced during the summer season requires careful management.

The flat land behind Skegness is fenland farmland and the drainage ditches that cross the landscape carry rats between the farms and the town. The Butlin's and other holiday parks on the edges of town bring their own pest management challenges. Wasp nests are common through summer in the older properties and in the chalets and static caravans at the holiday parks and the warm days and abundance of food along the coast create ideal conditions for wasps from July through to September.
