Hunstanton is a traditional seaside resort on the Wash coast of Norfolk, unusual in being one of the few east coast resorts that faces west, giving it spectacular sunsets over the sea. The cliffs, beach and promenade attract tourists through the summer and the food outlets, amusement arcades and cafes along the seafront generate waste that draws gulls in large numbers. Herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls nest on the flat roofs of the seafront buildings and become aggressive during the breeding season, swooping at visitors and tearing open bin bags. The mess they leave on shopfronts, cars and pavements is a constant headache for businesses along the Promenade and in the town centre.

Away from the seafront, the residential streets of Old Hunstanton and the housing areas inland have their own pest issues. The older brick and flint buildings in the village centre of Old Hunstanton develop gaps in their mortar as the soft lime pointing weathers and mice find their way through these openings. The holiday lets and guest houses that make up a large part of the accommodation in Hunstanton can pick up mouse and rat problems between bookings when properties sit empty and quiet for weeks at a time during the off-season.

The farmland that backs onto the eastern side of the town supports rats and field mice that move closer to houses after the harvest and the drainage ditches that cross the flat land provide routes for rats to travel between the fields and the built-up area. The Wash mudflats and saltmarshes to the west are important wildlife habitat but also support large numbers of rodents along the coastal fringe. Wasp nests turn up in the older buildings and holiday properties through summer and the warm west-facing walls catch the afternoon sun, making them attractive nesting spots for queen wasps in spring.
